In her report “Older Adults and Social Media,” Madden writes: “Young adults continue to be the heaviest users of social media, but their growth pales in comparison with recent gains made by older users. . . . Email is still the primary way that older users maintain contact with friends, families and colleagues, but many older users now rely on social network platforms to help manage their daily communications.”2
In spite of the surprisingly rapid adoption of new technologies by 50+ adults, including those 65 and over, there continue to be wide deviations in whether and how individuals go online. People encounter computers and other digital communications in different ways and at different times. Baby boomers, for instance, run the gamut from early adopters who started using computers in their teens or twenties and have kept up with the evolution of new technologies, including social media, to those who have elementary familiarity, at best, with new hardware, gadgets, or software. More and more are able to handle applications for jobs, mortgages, or benefits online, to search for health information, or even to join Facebook—and, yet, some still are not. Although there is a phenomenon known as “Boomer Social Media Mavens,” most boomers fall somewhere in the middle of the skills spectrum.3
For those who are active and in their seventies or eighties, the picture is even more uneven. As documented by the Pew Project, many are highly motivated, learning to use the Internet for shopping and travel information and even for communicating via social media. But there continue to be more in this age group who are simply not familiar with computers and have not found it necessary or possible to enter the online world.
